What Is Sole Water? Benefits, How-To, and Why It’s a Game-Changer for Mineral Balance

If you’re exploring ways to support your energy, hydration, and mineral balance naturally, you’ve probably heard of sole water (pronounced “so-lay”). This simple, ancient remedy is making a big comeback—and for good reason.

Sole water is made by saturating high-quality, unrefined salt (like Redmond Real Salt) in water until it can’t absorb any more. This creates a mineral-rich electrolyte solution that can support your adrenal health, hydration, and overall mineral balance.

Let’s break down the benefits, how to make it, and how it ties into your Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) results—especially if you’ve been told you have a low sodium-to-potassium (Na/K) ratio.

Benefits of Sole Water

💧 Natural Electrolyte Support
Sole water is packed with naturally occurring minerals like sodium, magnesium, calcium, and potassium—essential for hydration, nerve function, and muscle support.

Adrenal and Energy Support
For those struggling with fatigue, burnout, or brain fog, sole water may help regulate energy by supporting adrenal function, especially when taken first thing in the morning.

🧠 Improved Focus & Mood
Balanced minerals = balanced brain. Sodium plays a key role in nutrient transport and cellular communication, which affects mood, cognition, and mental clarity.

🦴 Digestive and pH Support
Sole may help promote stomach acid production and overall digestive health. It can also help alkalize the body thanks to the trace mineral content.

Sole Water and HTMA: A Smart Support for Low Na/K Ratios

If you’ve done an HTMA test and your sodium-to-potassium (Na/K) ratio is low, you may experience symptoms like:

  • Fatigue or burnout

  • Cravings for salt or sugar

  • Trouble focusing or low motivation

  • Blood sugar imbalances

A low Na/K ratio can indicate chronic stress or adrenal dysfunction. Since sodium is often depleted in this state, sole water is a gentle way to support sodium intake without overloading the system—especially when used in conjunction with a tailored mineral balancing plan.

It’s not a cure-all, but it’s a smart tool in your HTMA toolkit—especially when paired with other food-based mineral support.

Curious About Your Mineral Levels?

HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) is a non-invasive test that reveals your body’s mineral and stress patterns. Whether you're dealing with fatigue, hormonal issues, or gut challenges, your mineral balance is foundational.

💧 Sole Water, Sweating & Mineral Balance
Did you know that your ability to sweat is directly tied to your mineral balance? Sodium and potassium are key players in hydration and cellular energy—both of which are measured on your HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis).

If you struggle to sweat (even in a sauna or workout), it could be a sign your lymphatic system is sluggish or that your minerals are out of balance. Supporting your body with mineral-rich sole water can help restore hydration, open detox pathways, and make sweating feel natural again.

You’ll Need:

  • 1 clean glass jar with a plastic or non-metal lid

  • High-quality unrefined salt (Redmond Real Salt or Himalayan pink salt)

What Makes the Sleepy Girl Mocktail?

The recipe only requires two key ingredients: pure tart cherry juice or concentrate and magnesium powder. Here's why they are essential for a good night's sleep:

  1. Pure Tart Cherry Juice - Tart cherries contain a high concentration of melatonin, a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle and induces drowsiness at night. They are also rich in the amino acid tryptophan, which helps the body produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation.

  2. Magnesium - Magnesium glycinate is a vital mineral that regulates melatonin and cortisol production, promoting muscle relaxation and reducing anxiety.

This power couple is linked to positive sleep results, making this mocktail perfect for your nighttime routine.

Mocktail Beneficial Add-Ins

  • Citrus - Adding fresh citrus juice like lemon or lime provides vitamin C, which supports your adrenals and helps your body recover from stress-related damage.

  • Prebiotic Soda or Mineral Water - Top off your mocktail with prebiotic soda or mineral-enriched bubbly water. Not only does it taste great, but it also supports beneficial gut bacteria. However, be aware that prebiotics may trigger digestive discomfort like gas and bloating.

  • Sea Salt - Add a pinch of sea salt to support your adrenal glands and promote optimal hydration. Sea salt is also rich in magnesium, which helps promote restful, deep sleep.

Now that you have the nutritional background on this viral TikTok drink, start making your own and enjoy a restful sleep and improved gut health! Check out the Nourished Roots membership for more tips on supporting optimal sleep.

Adrenal Cocktail

The #1 drink recipe I recommend to all my clients: The Adrenal Cocktail, or what I like to call, The Orange Creamsicle.

The #1 drink recipe I recommend to all my clients: The Adrenal Cocktail, or what I like to call, The Orange Creamsicle.

But why are you recommending a cocktail and what the heck is an adrenal!?

adrenal2.jpg

Two very good questions! First and foremost, I’m not sure why this popular drink is called a cocktail seeing as how it’s alcohol free :/ but I recommend this recipe to my clients because most of my clients are stressed, burned out, lethargic, have sleep issues, and the list goes on!

adrenal9.jpg
adrenal8.jpg

So, what’s an adrenal?

An adrenal are actually hormone glands that are located on top of both kidneys. These glands produce hormones that help to regulate your metabolism, glucose usage, blood pressure, immune system, and response to stress.

The central theme here is balance. We want to make sure that we are supporting our body’s natural ability to regulate blood sugar, increase insulin sensitivity, and improve metabolic flexibility.

One small way we can do that is to make a nourishing drink that can bring balance back and give our adrenals some love in return! Adjusting macronutrient ratios as needed is imperative to reduce spikes in blood sugar and insulin. So for this recipe, our macro ratios are equal in order to support the adrenals while providing essential vitamins and minerals for healing any insulin resistance or adrenal fatigue.

adrenal10.jpg
adrenal7.jpg

You will need:

Fresh fruit juice (carbohydrate source) - Fruit juice like orange juice has high amounts of vitamin C which is needed when your adrenal glands are producing cortisol during stressful situations. The antioxidant properties are also needed in order to fuel the adrenal glands, protect against oxidative stress, boost the immune system and regulate cortisol production.

I like using this organic orange juice brand because there are no preservatives, no artificial ingredients, no added sugar, nada! As you can see in the picture, I like changing up other fruit juices just to level up the nutritional value of the cocktail. For example, I mix it up with an organic beet carrot-orange juice blend or tart cherry juice

Coconut Cream/Milk (Fat source) - Coconut milk has stable, saturated fatty acids that help stabilize blood sugar levels and provides your body with energy. Depending on your preference in texture, you can use either unsweetened coconut milk or cream. Personally, I think the cream is better and provides that “creamsicle” taste to the drink!

Hydrolyzed Collagen Powder (Protein Source) - Collagen acts as a blood sugar regulator and provides essential amino acids to support and build a resilient gut and boost cortisol production. My shop page has my favorite collagen of choice, vital proteins.

Sea Salt (Bonus* Mineral Source) - Sea salt and pink Himalayan sea salt contain essential electrolytes and minerals like potassium, sodium, and magnesium that are key for energy production, blood pressure, and adrenal function. Salt also elevates the flavor of the drink so don’t skimp!

adrenal10.jpg

When to make an adrenal cocktail

  • When your energy levels are low between 10-11AM and 2-3PM.

  • Right before bedtime - if you experience waking up at 3AM

  • Pre / Post workout snack

  • Breakfast - If you find yourself not hungry upon waking up and usually skip breakfast, this drink is a great way to kickstart that metabolism!

Sadly, summer is coming to an end, which means my favorite fruit, watermelon, will no longer be in season. Well, instead of being sad about it, I’ve decided I am just going to make strawberry watermelon mint agua frescas until I can’t anymore!

aguafresca7.jpg

Agua frescas are refreshing fruit drinks that are made simply with blended fruit, lime juice, and sometimes sweetener. It is best to use seasonal fruit so that it’s fresh and naturally more sweetened, making it unnecessary to add sugar.

aguafresca6.jpg

What I love about agua frescas is that the juice can be unfiltered, which means more fiber and more nutrients! You do not need to add any extra sweetener unless you absolutely want to, especially if you have picked a perfectly ripe and sweet fruit! So, not only are you avoiding extra sugar, you are also getting in your vitamins with this refreshing drink!

aguafresca1.jpg

I’ve raved about the benefits of watermelon in other blog posts (check out my watermelon salad and watermelon lime refresher recipes)! However, you can make agua frescas with just about any type of fruit like cantaloupe, cucumber, pineapple, strawberries, melon, mango or watermelon. This recipe is crazy simple and easy to follow, so feel free to mix things up depending on what you have on hand that’s ripe and in season.
